Failover between 2820 and 2830 was created by mike ainley
Hi

First time post (and first time using Draytek) so please be gentle!

We have a 2820 and a 2830 on two different ISPs. We use both connections for different sets of users. I've set the most important router (the 2820 on 10.0.0.11) to failover on WAN2 to the secondary (the 2830 10.0.0.10) on loss of connection which is working fine.

Is there any reason why I can't set up the reverse, and have 10.0.0.10 failover to 10.0.0.11?

Thanks

Mike

I've come here to ask the same quesiton (between a pair of 2820s).

Yet I can't even get to your stage. Surely you could just connect your 2830+WAN2 to your 2820 and have the same setup but in reverse?

Before I go asking a new (similar) question, could you let me know your settings? Sorry if this doesn't answer your question, but we might be able to work it out together.

Hi,

Thats kind of setup is not recommended (connecting a 2nd Router to WAN port of a 1st Router), since you'll get a "Double-NAT" issue, where you can get some problems with NAT packets (ex: NAT redirections, etc), because WAN2 will get a private IP.

The simplest way to manage this kind of setup, is to use Vigor2830 WAN1 (fixed ADSL port) connected to ISP1 and connect a pure ADSL2/2+ Modem on its second WAN2 (ISP2) port, where in this setup your Vigor2830 will get true Public IP's on both Vigor2830 WAN's.

ADSL2/2+ modem's are cheap, you can use (for example) Vigor120 as modem.

rj

I thought about that, but then you have double chance of a router failure taking out a whole networks internet access, rather than the same chance only half.

The above covers line failures without risking dropping a whole network.

NAT should only be an issue when failover is in effect, and thats only if you are using NAT in the first place.

Hi,

Thats not make sense, since if (as you way) you're connecting 2nd Router (Vigor2830) to WAN2 of Vigor2820, if Vigor2820 crash (the MAIN Router), WAN2 is also unavailable (independently if its in NAT or Routing), so there's no Internet access for anyone.

When using a single Router with multiple-WAN's, there's ALWAYS the risk of losing Internet access through any WAN's, when this single Router crashes, its a calculated risk. (I got several Vigor2820/2830 with Dual-WAN (using 2 distinct ISP's) and got very good results)

Just my 2cents.

rj

No, if router #1 crashes, people who are default pointing to router #2 still have access (and vice versa).
