2860ac Firmware upgrade failure was created by johnopenda
Hi all,

Background:
I am setting up a new router for a customer, and I was having difficulties getting the LAN IP address to change and stick, and the VPN users disappeared after rebooting, so thought upgrading the firmware might help, just in case there was a bug or something. I've done a number of firmware upgrades in the past to other routers/devices (this is the first Draytek upgrade), so knew to check around to make sure any instructions are clear, what the actual process was, etc.

Current Issue:
I tried to upgrade the firmware using the web interface. I downloaded the zip http://www.draytek.co.uk/download/support/v2860_3781_nonvector.zip, and uploaded the .all file. It was accepted, but the web interface displayed a message saying the firmware was corrupt. I then tried to use the .rst, but got the same error. I then re-downloaded the firmware again, and retried, but got the same error again for both files.

I then checked the Draytek website and found http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/guides/kb-firmwarerecovery. I downloaded the Firmware Upgrade Utility 3.6.5 from the website, configured my PC to 192.168.1.10, reset the router to TFTP mode and clicked the "Send" button. The "sending" progress bar appeared, got to 100%, and then the message "Detecting router activity" appeared with a progress bar. This eventually timed out - the lights on the router were still flashing as if in TFTP mode.

So far, I have tried all .all and .rst files in the following downloads, all with no success:
http://www.draytek.co.uk/download/support/v2860_3781_nonvector.zip
http://www.draytek.co.uk/download/support/v2860_3781_vector.zip
http://www.draytek.co.uk/download/support/v2860_3782RC6.zip
http://www.draytek.co.uk/download/support/v2860ac_381rc1_beta.zip

Am I missing something? Currently the router is broken.

OK, here's an update, in case anyone was wondering.

Firmware Upgrade Utility
  • As suggested in various places, ran this as administrator, and also in compatibility mode, both at once and one at a time.

  • Tried v3.6.1 which was available on the CD in the box (part of Router Tools 4.2.1);

  • Tried v3.6.4 (part of Router Tools 4.3.0)

  • Tried v3.6.5 standalone, downloaded from website.

Also, tried firmware available from the draytek ftp site ftp://ftp.draytek.com/Vigor2860/Firmware (whats the difference between .com firmware and .co.uk?) . Firstly, only the firmware that mentioned the "ac" model (v3.7.8.1 and v3.7.8.2), then tried each one, slowly moving back through the versions.

With each of the Firmware Upgrade Utilities, I have tried the firmware available from the ftp .com location and the .co.uk web downloads.

No luck, lights just flash continuously...

the difference bettwen the .com & .co.uk should be the modem codes

The current process for the utility tool is here (but use the files for your model) but you need windows pc to do that & turn off its firewall
http://www.forum.draytek.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=19253&p=80423&hilit=firmware+utility+tool#p79577
for time out so just check the username/pass

ALso you need to turn off the modem, press and hold with a small ball pen the reset button, turn on the modem (keep presing gentry the reset button), then let go the ball pen, press the send button
