Hi,
Being a SME, I would like to USB port also be a "USB Ethernet Adapter" for my LAN, as would be handy to have an extra LAN port as I'm currently need 5 LAN ports.

Ok I appreciate this LAN port wouldn't be Gigabit capable, but should be able to give 10/100 Mb's support and I could get a Ethernet Switch, but it seems to me that it could do this quite easily, as the 3G modem's work in that fashion.

Also USB standard has a "USB Ethernet" specification, so this should be fairly straight forward to add - please please :-)

Thanks
Mark.

Where there any comments from DrayTek on this, as I see this being a no brainer as would just be adding in the default USB CDC drivers ? and alot of USB Ethernet adapters would just work

I'm interested in this as it would save powering an ethernet switch, as I know the 2820Vn needs to be on all the time.

Thanks
Mark.

It's not feasible. The throughput would be terrible and unlike the other ports, the data would have to go through the CPU which would be far too much data and everything would stop. It can't be done and few people would want it. A cheap switch is £20 on ebay !

Why would the thru put be bad ? as you can get 10/100 USB Ethernet adapters ?

Just because it's a 100BaseT port doesn't mean you can get 100Mb/s through it. My car can do 90mph... never been above 30 around where I live !

Firstly, the USB port wouldn't drive it fast enough and secondly, switch components are specialised and designed to be fast. If you start passing every LAN byte through the router's CPU, the poor old CPU would be swamped....

Yes, I agree this would limit through put, but my point being is that the device allow's a MASS Storage device to be hung off it (and a 3G adapter for backup support).

I agree hanging anything off the USB, will effect the CPU because the way USB works (compared to dedicated h/w), but for partial use in a SOHO environment having an extra Ethernet port is handy especially for myself where I need to hang a multifunctional printer off it (fax/scanner ..etc), so it won't use up much bandwidth during a normal working day (Printer has a low powermode).

Yes purchase of £20 (or less) switch would work, but I'm thinking about power consumption here compared to be being self powered off USB.

For infrequent use, purchase & power consumption seems over an kill and currently just swap out cables.

(UnLess is there a way to get a simple 2 way switch, which requires no power - I use todate Ethernet econmizers (splitting Ethernet cables around the office), but obviously the switch know's nothing of them.

Thanks
Mark.
