Hi,

I'm looking through the UI and telnet commands looking for comprehensive information on the VDSL modem, specifically around find error rates. The SNR and attenuation seem OK to me ... At the moment my speeds arn't bad but my ping times are > 30ms which is horrible considering they were around 17ms 12 months ago.

Anyone know where I can find anything better ? The best info I can find at the moment is via the console:

I see that you are on plusnet fibre, installed by openreach. In which case, what sort of ping do you get by using the BT openreach VDSL modem on WAN2 instead of the internal one? (seems like a step back but worth a look).

Also, I note in the 2860 downloads page on draytek.co.uk there is a 3.7.3RC4 firmware which talks of improved throughput in the notes. Whether that is relevant is anyone's guess, but again, may be worth looking into.

I get around 17ms ping to my isp web site with 2820 + BT openreach VDSL modem on WAN2, wired. 10ms to the GW IP from the router's status page.

Oh, and 10ms to your GW IP which is interesting but maybe not relevant.

Well it looks like something changed overnight as ping times have come down ... about 22ms now to the gateway.

I think the DLAM management has reduced the interleaving. Still could be better i was getting 12-14ms on ADSL .... which is hugely frustrating as my FTTC cabenet is only about 140 meters by road, where as the exchange was significantly further c 1km

I guess i'll have to leave it alone and wait a while to see if it gets improved some more.

Seems a strange question .....

Why ? Because latency effects overall performance. Even if you're simply downloading a big file it will increase the amount of time to download. Take an example of a FTP download ... because the way FTP works each packet has to be acknowledged with a big file 15ms v 35ms can make a big difference. Other applications, online gaming are all effected in some way.

Why would you not care about latency ? IMHO it's almost more important that just the headline bandwidth ....

I didn't mean you didn't have a reason, I was just wondering what it was. The common reason I've seen is the time taken to shoot someone in the head in an online game :-) I'm not sure how much difference it would make to FTP typically though in itself. It will also depend on the packet size, but also each hop's own latency, packet loss at any given node. I'm not familiar with how FTP actually works, in whether it waits for an ACK for every packet before sending the next, or it uses 'sliding windows' and resends things out of order if needed.
