Scheduling Wireless on a DrayTek VigorAP 800

DrayTek Vigor Access Points are able to schedule when the wireless interfaces are active, either to limit access in a home use environment or to improve security in a work environment. The scheduler can be configured to operate on specified weekdays or even on specific dates if required.

The scheduler on DrayTek Vigor access points use triggers at each start time to perform an action, for instance one schedule entry would disable wireless at a specified time and the wireless will not become active again until another schedule entry enables wireless again.

Important Note - New Functionality

This guide is applicable to the VigorAP 800 access point only.

Firmware releases from March 2016 onwards have improved scheduling functionality, which is configured in a different way from the method shown in this setup guide.

Please refer to this updated setup guide to configure these models of VigorAP access point:

  • VigorAP 710
  • VigorAP 810
  • VigorAP 900
  • VigorAP 902
  • VigorAP 910C

This setup guide will demonstrate how to schedule the wireless (2.4GHz and 5GHz) on a DrayTek Vigor AP-900 access point with 1.1.5 firmware, so that its wireless networks are operational during office hours and are not available during weekends.

To set up scheduling on the access point, it is first necessary to set the time on the access point; this is configured from [System Maintenance] > [Time and Date].

On that page, select the Use NTP Client button, tick Enable Daylight Saving and click OK to apply the change. Click Inquire Time to check whether the router now has the correct time, this can take up to 30 seconds to get the correct time.

Please note that the access point must have internet access for this to work - if the AP has a static IP set, it also needs a working Gateway IP configured from the [LAN] > [General Setup] section.

To set up the scheduling, go to [Applications] > [Schedule], on that page, tick Enable Schedule then click OK so that the schedule options are available.

Once that has applied, click the Add button to continue.

This schedule entry will be used to bring down the 5GHz wireless interface (not required / available on single band APs such as the Vigor AP-810, select "Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) DOWN" as the action instead):

The Start Date can be ignored unless it needs to begin on a specific date.
The Start Time should be set to 18:00.
The Action should be set to Wi-Fi (5GHz) DOWN.
Set the Acts to Routine to enable the Weekday settings.
Under the Weekday selection, select all of the week days, there's no need to select Saturday or Sunday as the wireless would turn off on Friday at 6pm and would not be re-enabled until Monday.

Click OK to save that schedule entry and click Add to make another schedule entry.

This schedule entry will be used to bring down the 2.4GHz wireless interface:

Its setup is the same as the previous schedule but the Action is Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) DOWN.

Click OK to save that schedule entry and click Add to make another schedule entry.

This schedule entry will be used to bring up the 5GHz wireless interface (not required / available on single band APs such as the Vigor AP-810, select "Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) UP" as the action instead):

This schedule entry brings the wireless back online, the Action is set to Wi-Fi (5GHz) UP and the Start Time is set to 08:00 so that it turns on at 8am.

The Weekdays selected are only weekdays, so it will not bring up the wireless at the weekend. Once the wireless is disabled on Friday evening, the scheduler won't reactivate the wireless until Monday morning.

Click OK to save that schedule entry and click Add to make another schedule entry.

This schedule entry will be used to bring up the 2.4GHz wireless interface:

This is the same as the other schedule entry but the Action is Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) UP.

Click OK to save that schedule entry.

The [Applications] > [Schedule] page should now look like this:

The scheduling will now be in effect on the access point - the schedules will only take effect at the start time of each schedule entry so the wireless will not go up/down immediately after setting this up.

With this setup, the wireless will only be active between 08:00 and 18:00 on weekdays, the wireless will be offline during the weekend and outside of those hours.
