Can i use my 2710 for new Fibre? was created by dadslo
Sorry - probably a well asked question, but can't find an answer.

I though when i had fibre installed, BT/TalkTalk would provide a single, combined Modem/Router box, and so my existing 2710n would not work, and i would need to buy a new 2750n.

However, they have installed 2 separate boxes: A BT Openreach Modem and a Huawei HG532 Router - connected via hardwire ethernet.

Can't i just replace the Huawei HG532 router with my old 2710n?

Actually now i type this, i recall the BT Engineer mentioning 2 yellow cables - 1 specifically was for VDSL... Is this my answer, ie is it a special VDSL (ethernet) cable connecting the VDSL Modem to a special VDSL-in port on the Router, something my 2710n doesn't have?

How about this: Can i use my 2710n as an AP for the Huawei HG532? I can't get any wifi strength upstairs from the Huawei, so wondered if the 2710n could boost the signal from downstairs to upstairs?

Apologies for being noob.

Regards, Kevin

  • You cannot plug the 2710 into the BT Open reach box (AFAIK) because the BT box has a 10/100 ethernet port and your 2710 has an adsl wan port.

  • You cannot plug the 2710 into the VDSL line directly because it is adsl only, however...

  • You could replace the whole lot with a 2750n or 2850n.

  • You could plug a 2130n, 2830n or 2930n into the BT Open reach (replacing the Huawei router) as these have ethernet wan ports.

  • Yes you could use the 2710 as an AP plugging a lan port from there to a lan port on the Huawei router. You would need to turn off the DHCP in the draytek and make sure the ip address of the lan was on the same subnet but with a static address that did not clash, e.g:

If Huawei = 192.168.1.1 and its DHCP range started at 192.168.1.20, then the draytek could use 192.168.1.2 as it's address.
