Vigor2930 - DHCP on Virgin Media 120MB was created by garethrees
Hello All,

I've done a search but can't seem to see a similar problem so if I've missed it please point me in the right direction.

About 5 times a day I lose internet connection to virgin, can't ping domain names, IP addresses or anything. It takes between 1 and 15 mins to resolve itself so trouble shooting is a pain to say the lease.

What I noticed today when the connection was down that the firewall logs showed "DHCP <== Ack XID" twice in a row.

Normally it looks like this:-

Normal
<166>1 2013-06-18T17:34:35+01:00 my.router Vigor - - - Vigor: DHCP <== Offer XID = 0x8d78708, Client IP = 0.0.0.0, Your IP = EE.FF.180.157, Next server IP = 0.0.0.0, Relay agent IP = EE.FF.180.1, Option: 53, 54, 51, 01, 15, 03, 06, 31, 43,

<166>1 2013-06-18T17:34:47+01:00 my.router Vigor - - - Vigor: DHCP <== Offer XID = 0xcba3cc1f, Client IP = 0.0.0.0, Your IP = EE.FF.109.77, Next server IP = 0.0.0.0, Relay agent IP = EE.FF.180.1, Option: 53, 54, 51, 01, 03, 06, 15,

However on the two instances of problems I noticed that "DHCP <== Ack XID" was twice in a row.

Can anyone shed any light as to why this could be, any help appreciated.

i can not comment about the logs but i have a suggestion
go to
LAN >> General Setup ... then "DNS Server IP Address" ... enter the one from VM and then ... TicK the "Force DNS manual setting"
report if works

Thanks babis3g, I suspect that it will work, however the only reason I have not done it is that it will only be so long before VM allocate me a new dynamic IP and there is a conflict probably resulting in lost of service anyway, I'll try it and see what happens as a last resort.

Upgraded to the latest Firmware Version : v3.3.1.1

Switched off all "DoS defense" to see if it was performance related, the results:-

Performance seems to be improved, defiantly less drop outs but still get them,

<166>1 2013-06-28T01:01:30+01:00 X.Y.Z.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: WAN 1 is down.
<129>1 2013-06-28T01:01:30+01:00 X.Y.Z.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: WAN 1 is down.
<166>1 2013-06-28T01:01:30+01:00 X.Y.Z.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: WAN1 health detection failed!!

Still gettng the double Ack XID:-

<166>1 2013-06-27T20:06:31+01:00 192.168.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: DHCP <== Ack XID = 0x7e97741f, Client IP = AA.BB.CC.34, Your IP = AA.BB.CC.34, Next server IP = 0.0.0.0, Relay agent IP = DD.EE.FF.1, Option: 53, 54, 51, 01, 03, 06, 15, 43,
<166>1 2013-06-27T20:06:31+01:00 192.168.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: DHCP <== Ack XID = 0x7e97741f, Client IP = AA.BB.CC.34, Your IP = AA.BB.CC.34, Next server IP = 0.0.0.0, Relay agent IP = DD.EE.FF.1, Option: 53, 54, 51, 01, 03, 06, 15, 43,
<166>1 2013-06-27T20:06:41+01:00 192.168.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: statistic: WAN1: Tx 9 Kbps, Rx 128 Kbps (5 min average)
<166>1 2013-06-27T20:06:41+01:00 192.168.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: statistic: WAN2: Tx 1 Kbps, Rx 20 Kbps (5 min average)
<166>1 2013-06-27T20:06:41+01:00 192.168.1.10 Vigor - - - Vigor: statistic: Session Usage: 87 (5 min average)

Will report back to support and see what they say, my gut feeling is that the 2930 cannot cope with the 120MB connection the Virgin Media is allowing and there are limitations with the performance throughout of the WAN1 Ethernet port, but I would like to fully understand the root cause.

Only replying to speed issue
The 2930 is got throughput 90mb but if you close wan 1 (disable) may go higher
My 2920 is getting all 105mb even with DoS On (i am still at VM 100mb package) with throughput 150mb (according to draytek Taiwan specs) but when i enable wan 1 seems is stolen power from the CPU and falling down to 90mb when use both wans
