My home network router is a Vigor 2830. Connected to it is a Network Attached Storage Unit which contains two hard drives, which hold the main and backup copies of all my data (I have no data on the C drive of my PC - just the operating system and programs). The router and the NAS unit are powered up 24/7, the PC is only powered up when it is in use.

I would like to be able to access the data on the hard drives within the NAS remotely via my laptop, over the internet, from pretty well anywhere - the PC would, of course, be switched off at the time, as I would not be at home. I understand that this might be possible but I have no idea where to start! Can anyone advise me, in general terms, if this is indeed possible and if so how? Is there a good book that I should buy about remotely accessing home network routers?

Don't bother buying a book.

Check if you have a static IP or a dynamic IP (go here: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ , and note down the number. Reset the router. Go to the same webpage and check if the number is the same or different). If you have a static IP, then you're halfway there. If you have a dynamic IP, I'd recommend setting up a dynamic DNS hostname (e.g. http://www.noip.com/ ).

Then you'll need to set up the VPN server on your 2830:

Once you have all that working, it'll be as though your laptop was connected with a cable to your DrayTek, and you should be able to access your NAS as normal.
