Hi All,

I have a 2820VN, on which I had to change the default VOIP ports in order for Asterisk to run behind it. I now need to upgrade the router to allow for a fibre connection. The 2860 VN+ seems a good option, but can you do the same (change the default VOIP port numbers), in order to run asterisk behind it?

(I need the 'VN' model as opposed to the non voip router to act as a backup VOIP solution if the Asterisk fails)

Be grateful for anyone's experience on this!

I too have a 2820Vn and have just purchased 2860n+ (not installed yet a job for next week) as I don't use the voip of the 2820Vn any more - but a couple of thoughts

I use a Raspberry PI as a backup for VOIP works really well running Raspbx. Also you could probably keep your 2820Vn and connect its Wan input to the 2860 and use the phone output in an emergency

Thanks for your reply. I'd not thought of that - but wouldn't the 2860vn still filter/clash with the SIP trunk from Asterisk as the voip traffic still ultimately goes through it after the 2820vn? Or were you suggesting to just get the 2860N+ and drop the 'V', keeping the 2820vn/Asterisk set up as it is now?

I was suggesting to buy just the 2860n+ save a bit of money over the Vn+ and spend it on a Raspberry Pi running RasPBX or similar as a backup to the main asterisk system.
Or plug the Wan port of the 2820vn into one of the 2860n+ ports and use that as the backup for the voip. Think it should work OK

Great idea. I'll look into this. It would mean I don't have to feel guilty about not using a perfectly usable 2820vn just because I need to upgrade to fibre.

Just seen that the 2820 is considered end of life and is not going to get the security fix for "Poodle" vulnerability

So it looks like you (we both) have an excuse for retiring good 2820Vn routers - There must be a lot of 2820 routers still in use though mines not that old!!
