Newbie Question: Access NAS from Uni was created by jrudman
Hi

Apologies in advance for the basic level of this question. I'm sure there's a "how to" on the Draytek web site but I don't know the keywords - I'm guessing VPN is there somewhere!
My son is starting university and wants to be able to access the family NAS from his residence or maybe one of the other buildings.
We have a Vigor2860n+ router. The NAS is Synology DS214play. The remote computer is an Apple MacBook (so NOT Windows).
Hopefully the setup only needs to be at my end since I doubt we can do anything at the uni end.
Could someone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks
John

This way :) ====>

SSL VPN is the most likely to work through whatever network your son's MacBook will be connected to at Uni, though in my experience it's quite sluggish. L2TP/IPsec would be better, but might struggle to connect - some experimentation required!

Whatever the Macbook's operating system is called these days, it may well have it's own built-in VPN client that can be used in place of Draytek's SmartVPN client - but I'm a long time Apple hater, so I wouldn't know :?

If you don't have a fixed IP address at the 2860 end, you'll need to use a Dynamic DNS service, to locate it. I believe Draytek's own service is straightforward to setup these days (I did mine ages ago and had to do it in Mandarin, which was entertaining :wink: ). Recent changes to Draytek's offering means that the Router needs V3.9.0 or later firmware. My own 2860 is totally unstable on anything > 3.8.9.4 :( ...

Just to add - the NAS itself may have some built-in functionality that can make at least some of its content available over the Internet. I don't know anything about them either :D

Thanks for the leg-up. We do have a fixed IP, so that's one less complication.

I came across this: https://kb.synology.com/en-id/DSM/tutorial/How_to_make_Synology_NAS_accessible_over_the_Internet ... which would probably just need an "Open Port" defining on the 2860...
