Hi does anyone have any experience or know if a Vigor 2830Vn can be connected to a BT Smart Hub2 to provide 3rd party voip support?

Essentially I am looking at getting BT FTTP and as their hub2 does not support 3rd party voip I was wondering if I could hook on the existing Vigor router to provide the voip side.

I had a 2860Vn and now a 2865Vac running behind a Smarthub2.

The Smarthub is providing BT Digital Voice and the DrayTek SIP access. Both working fine.

You need to open the firewall on the Smarthub (allow pinpricks if I remember) for SIP to the DrayTek so configure a static IP on WAN2.
No changes were required on the DrayTek if I remember from when it was acting as a modem itself.

Should work the same with a 2830Vn.

My solution (gleaned from several posts here) is:
1. Change the smart hub 2's address range to one which doesn't conflict with my draytek 2866: I chose 192.168.31.x.
2. On the 2866, re-configure WAN2 to 'Static or Dynamic IP' and 'Obtain an IP address automatically' from 192.168.31.1
3. Connect the WAN2 port on the 2866 to any LAN port on the smart hub 2.
Then the smart hub 2 gave the 2866 the address 192.168.31.19, and the 2866 kept management of it's number range (192.168.1.x)

** However** there's a downside, which is that download speeds drop by 2/3 from 45Mbps to 15Mbps (as measured from my PC connected to the 2866). Reconnecting the PC to the smart hub 2 gives a download of 45Mbps.

Has anyone see this speed drop when running a Draytek router behind the smart hub 2?

What you have given as your solution will get the 2866 to use the SH2 as it's gateway.

Are you using the SH2 for wireless or running everything via the 2866 ?

I'd also set the 2866 to use a static address (either manually or fix the address on the SH2 DHCP). This will then allow the VOIP port to be opened on the SH2 to the WAN2 IP of the 2866.
Also check your MTU size?

On my 2865 I'm getting the same throughput via the DrayTek via WA2 to SH2 as when connected directly to SH2.
Do you have the latest firmware running, also disable Data Flow Monitor to see if that makes any difference.

The latter - I turned off the SH2's wifi.

Despite the double-NATing (at SH2 and 2866) I found that my grandstream ATA, which is plugged into the 2866, works ok.

Also check your MTU size?

It's currently set to the maximum (error-free) value according to the 2866. I assume a bigger MTU is better than a smaller one? But maybe it should be set equal to the MTU value the SH2 uses? Does the SH2 report its MTU value?.
