It might be interesting to check out the received signal from each - I found significant differences (using iStumbler to estimate the relative signal strengths at the distant machine).

As a general point - It's very frustrating that the router manufacturers don't seem to be able to give a clear explanation of the function of each antenna. I suspect this is because the WiFi capability is in a bought-in card. Draytek's expertise will be in the router hardware and firmware, and they would probably leave the RF aspects to the WiFi suppliers (Gigabyte / Atheros in the 2800).

I originally trained as an RF engineer, and I spent many years around antennas and signal propagation. It's a highly specialised area, and there are relatively few engineers working on this these days. For that very reason I'd have hoped to find some appropriately written guides to the RF aspects of WiFi hardware on the Net. I haven't found anything so far - most frustrating.

Thanks gcp. An additional question... as the MIMO technology uses the three aerials in a 2T3R (two transmit, three receive) configuration, does anyone know which of the three aerials is the one that DOESN'T transmit?

I have used the right socket as you look at it for the high gain ant-2309 together with the omni directional draytek antenna (sold in 3s) on my 2820n, and it has jumped from 50% to 70% signal quality on my laptop built in wireless (passing through 2 walls) :lol:

Note, I am not using wireless N, just 54g

Just a quick update to this old thread. I've now played around with connecting the aerial to different sockets and I can confirm that as RobbieBox suggested connecting to the right most socket gives the most noticeable increase in wireless signal strength.
